Complexity of Behavioral Healthcare

Addiction and its co-occurring mental health conditions and primary mental health conditions are some of the most profound and complex healthcare problems facing individuals, families, and society. Behavioral health concerns have been a problem throughout history. Today we are beginning to understand better the drivers of addiction and mental health, their effects on the mind, brain, and body, and effective methods of reducing its severity and implications.

Chronic Disease Management

Addiction and substance use disorder is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management. The work of inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient addiction treatment is to help patients achieve initial sobriety and stabilization, learn skills to address the psychological and environmental factors that perpetuate addiction and to enter a continuous process of integrated, proactive healthcare and disease management.

Individualistic Approach

Individualized care tailors treatments and services to a patient’s health needs. We believe that the more personalized we can make our care plans, the more effective treatment can become. Targeted care plans work best when they meet physical, psychological, and emotional needs. This is why we take into account a rounded view of each patient’s personality and perspectives in addition to bio-psycho-social diagnoses. Individualistic care is the term we use to describe our holistic, person-based approach to tailoring treatment.

Integrated Holistic Care

Treating dual-diagnosis addiction and mental health conditions requires an exceptionally comprehensive range of therapies. Treatment is most effective when these therapies are integrated into a highly coordinated range of patient services that work toward a common goal.

Evidence-Based Approaches & Innovation

Evidence-based approaches are those supported by empirical evidence and best practice. Therapies employed at Futures, such as dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, and others, are evidence-based therapies that have been proven to be effective psychotherapies for the treatment of addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions.

Measurement-Based Care

Measurement-based care is the process of using symptom rating scale data to identify and address changes in patient progress during treatment. Recent studies by the Kennedy Forum support the effectiveness of measurement-based care in the treatment of addiction. The Joint Commission, the nation’s most significant medical services accreditation and certification organization, made measurement-based care a requirement in 2018.

Specialized Therapies

Some conditions benefit from specialized care. Addiction differs extensively from person to person. When specific symptoms or underlying conditions are particularly prominent for a particular patient, a dedicated treatment regimen designed to focus attention on that symptom or condition can save lives and lead to better long-term outcomes.

Empowered Team Culture

Futures is a clinically-driven organization that fosters an inclusive and empowering culture. All Futures’ Team members — from management to staff — are supported in their mission, galvanized around the central goal of compassionate and effective patient care, and empowered to make meaningful change. Culture plays an important role in addiction treatment and recovery. Patients and staff alike are encouraged to provide feedback to improve program quality.

Patient Service Focus

At Futures, service is foremost. Every Futures Recovery program and every member of the Futures’ team is committed to providing the highest quality of patient service to facilitate better care and positive treatment experience. Here, the spirit of service also signifies a deep understanding of the disease of addiction. Every member of the team knows that each patient is a unique individual that is being treated for a progressive, life-threatening illness.

Ethical Practice Leadership & Referral

Futures is wholly committed to maintaining the highest standards of ethical practice. Patient privacy, appropriate referral practices, care efficacy, and proper communication are essential to all members of the Futures’ team. The field of addiction treatment has faced ethical challenges in recent years. Like many areas of medicine, a small number of bad actors has endangered and misrepresented patients and made it more difficult for individuals and families find quality care.

Advocacy & Destigmatization

Addiction and mental illnesses are highly stigmatized conditions in our culture. Negative perceptions surrounding these conditions and the side-effects of addictive behaviors can make it difficult for individuals and families to feel comfortable enough to seek the help they need. Fear and misunderstanding drive much of the negative thinking about addiction, and mental illness. Recent studies suggest the majority of Americans believe that bad decision-making causes addiction. Addiction is, in fact, a brain disease and many biological, psychological, and social factors play a role in developing and perpetuating addictive behaviors and their co-occurring mental health conditions.
