Presentation Overview
While youth undulates before our eyes, the truth is according to the US Census Bureau, the baby boomer population – 78 million strong – will be over the age of 65 by the middle of the century. This means that 1 in 5 Americans will be a senior citizen. They will outnumber 5-year olds. Alcohol is the most widely abused substance; followed by illicit and prescription drugs. Baby boomers spend more money on marijuana than other cohorts. Anxiety, depression, loneliness, grief and loss (loss of loved one, living arrangements, friends, work, loss of function, chronic pain, and other physical maladies, (diabetes, heart attacks, hypertension, cataracts, glaucoma, dementia, Alzheimer’s) are common. How clinicians interface with this group is important. How does a millennial clinician interface with a 72 year old? This session will address how important it is for the clinician and team working with seniors to understand the differences between themselves and seniors and to become acquainted with understanding the best evidence based strategies.
