SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture Series: Understanding Adult Children of Alcoholics\, Addicts\, and Dysfunctional Families (ACOA)
DESCRIPTION:Futures is a proud member of the Florida behavioral healthcare community committed to reducing the stigma surrounding addiction and its treatment. We invite you to join our virtual lecture series via the Zoom platform to learn from innovative practitioners\, and enjoy a morning of knowledge\, inspiration\, and camaraderie. This will be a virtual lecture with Q&A to follow. We will provide a reminder and meeting link to anyone who has registered. This event is co-sponsored by BaysideCEU.   \nPresentation Overview\nIdentifying and understanding the traits of adult children of alcoholics\, addicts\, and dysfunctional families is important for helping our clients and patients recognize their own experiences\, needs\, and patterns of behavior. With understanding there comes safety\, support\, and validation. These are essential for us to create a safe and secure environment for our clients and patients to lean into vulnerability\, which is important for healing. This course will unpack the best ways to support ACOA individuals on their healing journey by defining the key treatment methods to implement. \nCourse Objectives: \n1. Participants will learn to identify the present-day characteristics of adult children of alcoholics\, addicts\, and dysfunctional families. As identified in the ACOA literature\, page 5-6 of the Big Red Book\, there are fourteen characteristics of an Adult Child that define the “Laundry List”. \n2. Participants will learn how to identify the origin of ACOA traits in order to provide greater understanding and validation to their clients/patients. When we are able to provide language to our experiences\, it is then that we are able to accurately move through the experience with greater awareness of our thoughts\, feelings\, and needs. Helping our clients/patients get to this point allows us to accurately treat the root causes of their ACOA traits.   \n3. Participants will be able to better understand how to help their clients/patients work through and overcome ACOA traits through proven treatment methods such as: CBT\, DBT\, EMDR therapy; as well as\, the use of attachment theory\, grief work\, boundaries\, and self-care. \n  \nLEARN AND EARN CEU’S AT OUR FREE LECTURE SERIES \nYou will need your license number and type to receive credit for this course. SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture Series: From Expected Joy to Unexpected Suffering: Understanding the Spectrum of Perinatal Mood Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Futures is a proud member of the Florida behavioral healthcare community committed to reducing the stigma surrounding addiction and its treatment. We invite you to join our virtual lecture series via the Zoom platform to network\, learn from innovative practitioners\, and enjoy a morning of knowledge\, inspiration\, and camaraderie. This will be a virtual lecture with Q&A to follow. We will provide a reminder and meeting link to anyone who has registered. \nPresentation Overview\nMotherhood is one of the most powerful experiences and demanding roles of a woman’s life and yet\, mental health professionals rarely receive any formalized training regarding working with women during the perinatal period. This is despite that 1 in 7 women will encounter a perinatal mood disorder and the relatively high risk of maternal death due to suicide within the first year postpartum. Many mental health professionals mistakenly believe perinatal mood disorders should be treated the same as any mood disorder. When in actuality\, perinatal mood disorders can differ in several significant and meaningful ways. This workshop will explore how perinatal mood disorders are unique\, nuanced\, and require a comprehensive understanding to effectively assess\, diagnose\, and treat. During this workshop we will examine the scope of perinatal mood disorders\, examine case examples\, and explore how assessment and treatment differ during the perinatal period than other times in a woman’s life. \n  \nCourse Objectives: \nObjective 1: Explore and differentiate the spectrum of perinatal mood disorders \nObjective 2: Identify screening and assessment for treating pregnant and postpartum women as a ‘special population’\n \nObjective 3: Observe how perinatal mood disorders differ in their presentation than traditional psychological/ psychiatric disorders \nObjective 4: Understand treatment options and planning \nObjective 5: Recognize scope of experience and training requirements to treat this population \n  \nLEARN\, EARN CEU’S\, AND NETWORK AT OUR FREE LECTURE SERIES \nYou will need your license number and type to receive credit for this course. SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture Series: Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: The Unspoken International Epidemic That is Costing People Lives
\nPresentation Overview\nThere is a silent epidemic happening in the United States—Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI)—and it’s costing people their lives. This self-harm includes self-cutting\, self-burning\, self-battery\, and more. Estimates reveal that people in the U.S. have a 30% lifetime risk for engaging in some form of self-injury. But the bodily injuries caused aren’t the only reason for concern. The correlation between NSSI and suicide is more than 60%. And this isn’t limited to adolescent girls\, both males and females across the entire age spectrum suffer from this problem—many times in silence. It’s time to break the silence surrounding self-injury in the U.S. In this virtual lecture series you’ll learn more about this troubling phenomenon including the alarming statistics\, the most common forms of NSSIs\, and the main reasons people self-harm. Let’s help those suffering in silence to find their voice\, put aside their shame\, and heal their bodies and minds from this self-injury crisis. \n  \nWe will discuss and learn about various topics including: \n                      I. Why Does It Matter? \n                      II. Define NSSI \n                                  A. Definition \n                                  B. Myths \n                                  C. Demographics \n                                  D. Types of NSSI \n                      III. Why Do People Self-harm? \n                      IV. Suicide Risk \n                                  A. What Not to Say \n                                  B. Stressing the Correlation of NSSI and SI \n                      V. Final Thoughts\, Q&A \nCourse Objectives: \nObjective 1: Bring awareness to the alarming statistics of how prevalent it is and the strong correlation with suicide. \nObjective 2: Debunk the stereotypes & myths—demographics\, what NSSI is and\, more importantly\, what it isn’t. \nObjective 3: The top 3 out of the 35+ reasons why people self-harm. \nObjective 4: The top 2 worst things that you can say to someone who self-injures that may increase their odds of suicide. \nObjective 5: Understanding that NSSI is more than cutting; addressing the top 5 forms out of 20+ types of NSSI.  This is important because people often do not recognize NSSI for what it is and miss the signs.  As a note\, a large number of my clients injure for 1+ years before it is ever discovered. \n  \nLEARN\, EARN CEU’S\, AND NETWORK AT OUR FREE LECTURE SERIES \nYou will need your license number and type to receive credit for this course. SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture Series: “Spirituality in Recovery”
DESCRIPTION:Futures is a proud members of the Florida behavioral healthcare community committed to reducing the stigma surrounding addiction and its treatment. We invite you to join our virtual lecture series via the Zoom platform to network\, learn from innovative practitioners\, and enjoy an afternoon of knowledge\, inspiration\, and camaraderie. This will be a one hour virtual lecture with a Q&A to follow. We will provide a reminder and meeting link to anyone who has registered. \nPresentation Overview\nIncreasing in popularity is the notion that if addiction is isolation than the opposite of addiction is connection. Connection can apply to one’s life in many ways but society predominately thinks of our outward connections with friends\, family members\, colleagues\, and the people who we encounter every day. However\, there is also a strong need to connect inwardly with oneself and our impact to the larger universe and meaning of life. When we discuss Spirituality in Recovery\, we explore this idea of inward connection and how it can help develop the resilience needed to sustain recovery and good mental and physical health. \nWe will discuss and learn about topics involving: \n\n\n1. Identify the difference between religion and spirituality.\n\n\n  \n\n\n2. Explain the effects of substance use disorders on spirituality.\n\n\n  \n\n\n3. Explain the benefits of spirituality in the grieving process.\n\n\n  \n               4. Identify the benefits of a spiritual practice.\nWe will also take this time to explore the spiritual journey and its connection to those grieving from someone lost to an overdose or attachment to an addiction. This epidemic has grown so much so there is no longer 6 degrees of separation between people who have experienced loss to addiction\, or closely knows someone who has been impacted. We will discuss ways to support spiritual connection during the very vulnerable time of grief and how to help one discover the unyielding power we each possess.
